SUMMER20134CyanobacterialMonitoringProgram2013Cyanobacteriacommonlytermedblue-greenalgaeareatypeofphotosyntheticbacteriathatoccurinfreshwaters.Blue-greenalgalbloomsarecommonlyfoundinfreshwaterbodiesthroughouttheworld.BloomsusuallyoccurinlatesummerorearlyfallandaredependentonfromtheLakePartnerProgramCoordinatorAnnaDeSellasspecificenvironmentalconditionssuchascalmwaterconditionshightemperaturesandelevatedphosphorouslevels.TheOntarioMinistryoftheEnvironmentMOEandpartnersareworkingtobetterunderstandtheenvironmentalfactorssuchasphosphoruslevelsandweatherconditionsthatcontributetoblue-greenalgalblooms.Betweenthespringandfallof2013FOCAtheCentralAlgomaFreshwaterCoalitionandtheMinistrywillmonitorcyanobacteriawaterchemistrylaketemperaturedissolvedoxygenandotherenvironmentalfactorsinfourlakesinAlgomaanareaintheNorthernRegionthathasexperiencedrecurrentblue-greenalgalblooms.Thedatacollectedwillbeusedtoinvestigatethefactorsthatmaytriggeranalgalbloomandassesswhybloomsoccurinsomelakesbutnotothers.MonitoringstudiessuchastheAlgomaprojectwhichwasmadepossiblebypartnershipswithlakestewardsareavaluableapproachtounderstandingalgalbloomsandprotectingOntariolakes.LakePartnerProgramTheLakePartnerProgramLPPisOntariosvolunteer-basedwaterqualitymonitoringprogramforinlandlakes.FOCAhasbeenaproudpartneroftheMOELakePartnerProgramsinceitsinceptionin1996.In2013itisprojectedthatover600LPPvolunteerswillsample778sitesonOntariosinlandlakes.Thisequatestoa10increaseinthenumberoflakesbeingsampledsince2011makingtheLPPthelargestlow-leveltotalphosphorusmonitoringprograminNorthAmerica.Therearenow291lakesintheprovincewithatleast10yearsofLAKESTEWARDSUPDATESCyanobacterialmonitoringworkshopinAlgomaApril2013
